Massage Schools: What You Need To Know Before You Enroll

Massage Schools

So you have decided to become a massage therapist. You have decided that becoming one will give you joy, professional fulfillment as well as a steady source of income. You want to get the proper accreditation so you are now on the lookout for good and reliable massage schools where you can obtain competent massage therapy education. Before you sign on the fine line, however, you need to know two important things --- the choice of school and the choice of course.

Apart from the location, environment, facilities and set by certain massage therapy schools, you have to take into great consideration the aspects of legality and competence. What good is a massage school that may be near where you are but has a shady reputation or does not have the necessary permits? What good is an expensive school if the instructors are inexperienced and fall short of recognized standards? What good is a massage school that has all the books, video tapes and other resources if they do not implement effective hands-on training? You should make sure that the school is a licensed massage therapy institution and that it has satisfactorily passed all health care regulations based on your country's requirements. In Canada, for instance, the educational requirements range from 0 to 3,000 hours although only three provinces require this. A total of 3,000 hours is required in British Columbia, Canada (roughly equivalent to three years of massage therapy training) but with an added condition --- only members of a certain college there can call themselves "registered massage therapists". The massage instructors should also be taken into consideration. They should have verifiable experience and credentials. Remember, there are a lot out there who teach even if they do not have enough hands-on or formal training. It still pays if your instructor has enough clinical know-how as you will be assured of worthy information and techniques.

Another important factor that should be considered is the course the would-be therapist or masseuse should study and if such is available in the curriculum of his or her chosen massage school. After all, the chosen course has a lot to do with the student's ensuing career path. The massage courses should be in depth and diverse. The student, on the other hand, should choose one or even more wherein he or she feels highly comfortable in because this will show in the way he or she will treat his or her future patients.

Given these, prior research is but a must before deciding which massage school to attend. As a future masseuse, you should understand that you have to have the applicable training, skills and knowledge as well as inter-personal proficiencies for you to handle any given situation and client. Preparedness and an informed choice can help, too.
