What Massage Therapist Schools Should Have

Massage Therapist Schools

If you plan of getting into the massage therapy industry, chances are you have already found several massage therapist schools either online and offline. You may already have a shortlist by now and it is just a matter of comparing fees, available courses and facilities plus checking on the related expenses and other concerns on your part like how much it would take for you to get to that school or learning institution everyday, should you quit your job to attend school full time or if you now need to enroll your youngest child in daycare. Before you do decide and make the necessary changes in your life, however, there are some things that you must know about massage therapist schools and what they should have.

First of all, like any reliable learning institution, massage schools should have the necessary business permits and accreditation. Do your research and do not hesitate to ask all about the legalities surrounding a certain massage school and its operations. Depending on your country and set requirements, massage schools need proper recognition from a national certification board as well. Check whether the schools you already short listed already have these or if they do not, ask why and if they are on the process of obtaining the necessary documents. Do this to avoid enrolling in a fly-by-night institution.

You should also make sure that the school has enough competent staff and teachers. Effective massage instructors usually have years of experience and verifiable credentials. Check each of the teachers' qualifications especially those who will teach your preferred course. For instance, it would be best if your teacher knows a lot about Shiatsu, Thai and Chinese acupuncture if he or she teaches Asian bodywork massage courses. The teacher's experience and know-how will play a major role especially since apart from information taken from textbooks, video tapes and other resource materials, you would need to know the actual techniques and methods in dealing with a certain patient who has specific needs or injuries. Of course, it will also help if the school has friendly administrative staff members.

Thirdly, there should be good facilities. It would help if the school has state-of-the-art facilities for you to train on. These will definitely help you in your future real life career as massage therapist. The facilities should also include open spaces and preferably a library full of health related books.

Lastly, you may want to verify if the school has programs like career or employment assistance (for you to land a job right after training), externship opportunities (for you to do hands-on training in a real world setting and supervised by an instructor) and of course, if they have enough massage courses available for you to choose from. After all, you are enrolling because of the training and you deserve to receive only quality education.
