Massage Education

There is a reason why massage and therapy go together. Massage is not just simply rubbing oil and kneading stiff muscles. Massage therapy is a mixture of art and science that leads to the healing of the human body and mind. It is a time-honored practice that also has requirements and uses various strokes, methods and techniques. Because it deals with the human body and other sensitive aspects surrounding the human anatomy, it is but right for would-be therapists or masseuses to undergo appropriate, competent and sufficient massage therapy education.

There are a lot of massage therapy courses available today. Both online and offline massage therapy schools offer courses wherein the students will get to learn the ins and outs of the profession. Students will learn not only anatomy, physiology and medical terminologies but the emotional, physical and psychological effects of every technique or method involved in a certain type of massage. There may also be hands-on training in sports massage, Swedish massage and deep tissue therapies. For advanced courses, though, instructors may teach reflexology, tuina, Rolfing, zero balancing, Acupressure, Bowen technique, lymphatic massage, core energetics and hot stone massage (quite popular in spas and wellness centers these days).

Depending on what field of massage you want to get in to, students have the choice to either take up just one course or a mixture of courses. For instance, if a student wishes to work in a health care institution, it is best if he or she takes up courses in sports massage, cross fiber and neuromuscular therapy. If the student is eyeing a job in an acupuncture clinic, it is best if he or she masters tuina, shiatsu and Acupressure. Be careful in choosing where to get massage therapy training, though, as there are comprehensive and accredited massage therapy schools and there also are those that do not have enough competent staff.

These days, people who wish to obtain massage therapy education can choose to either earn a full diploma and degree (usually after three years of comprehensive training) or a certificate (usually after a few weeks or up to nine months of lectures and training). On the other hand, there are also a lot of community workshops and seminars that discuss the basics of massage therapy. The latter can be treated as a refresher course or as additional source of information but it cannot be treated as sufficient education.

Over time, people have recognized the fact that being a masseuse is not just part time work. By obtaining massage therapy education and mastering the methods, people will have the chance to soon lead fulfilling, lasting and even lucrative massage therapy careers.
